This was nothing short of a communist invasion, in his eyes, and the patriots of Green Charter needed to rise up and confront the Red Peril. But the backlash in Green Charter represents something seldom seen since the Red Scare: a quasi-militant, homegrown resistance to the perceived threat of communism at home. But as the war over Gotion began to consume Green Charter, Riebow began to feel that the township board was behaving "too secretly." It's easy to dismiss what's happened in Green Charter as yet another sign of America's descent into dangerous incivility. Asked about Gotion's plans in Green Charter, Panetta replied, "I don't think there's any question that they are going to take advantage of that situation."

Charter shares plunged more than 8% Tuesday after its Chief Financial Officer Jessica Fischer said the company could lose broadband subscribers in the fourth quarter. Charter competitor Comcast 's stock also slipped more than 3% in midday trading. Comcast reported it lost 18,000 broadband subscribers in the third quarter. Even so, Fischer believes Charter will return to subscriber growth, citing a potential rebound in the housing market. The bank upgraded shares of the telecommunications company to overweight from overweight on Friday and lifted its price target to $550 from $450. Disney also agreed to drop eight of its less-viewed networks, signaling the end of bloated cable TV bundles. Broadcasters could negotiate fees that included adding new cable TV channels. NEW YORK (AP) — Hours before the fall's first “Monday Night Football” game, Disney and Charter Communications have settled a business dispute that had left some 15 million cable TV customers without ESPN and other Disney channels. Disney said that because of the deal, the majority of its ESPN customers would have service restored to Charter's Spectrum cable system right away. Charter confirmed the deal Monday. It comes before the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills were to debut their season on ESPN and ESPN2. It's the first game for the Jets with Aaron Rodgers as quarterback, and many Spectrum customers are in the New York area.

ESPN and other Disney channels disappeared from Charter's Spectrum cable service on Aug. 31, as contract negotiations reached an impasse. Disney announced this spring that Monday Night Football games would be carried on both ESPN and its ABC Network. That means Spectrum cable subscribers who live in markets with a local ABC TV affiliate not owned by Disney, including Buffalo, New York, will be able to watch Monday's NFL match-up broadcast. Some 25 million cable subscribers have cut the cord, industry-wide, over the last five years, as rising prices for content translate to higher fees for subscribers, contributing to the exodus. Disney, for its part, announced a discount for its Hulu + Live TV service, which will provide access to the U.S. Open, college football and NFL games.

Charter is locked in a distribution battle with Disney as the second-largest U.S. cable company negotiates with the media conglomerate over how much its channels are worth and how to package them. Such "carriage disputes" are commonplace in the media world, though this negotiation may shape the future of television in the streaming era. The kickoff to the NFL season is Thursday night, and Charter Communications doesn't appear to be moving down the field in its negotiations with Disney . On Thursday, Charter CEO Chris Winfrey said that "Disney will be who decides" what happens in the dispute. "It's unfortunate that Charter decided to abandon their consumers by denying them access to our great programming," Disney said Thursday. Adding to the pressure is the kickoff of the NFL season — with ESPN's first "Monday Night Football" game of the season occurring in a few days — as well as the U.S. Open and the beginning of college football season. Currently, ESPN+ offers its own exclusive content and games, with some overlaps from the TV network, such as some "Monday Night Football" broadcasts.

Even Charter thinks that cable TV sucks now

Charter, the second-biggest cable company in the US, says the cable TV model is broken. Fights like this have been common across the history of cable TV. Because Charter pays companies like Disney per subscriber, fewer cable TV subscribers meant less money coming in for TV networks. Charter might never actually say it out loud, but it's clear from the presentation that it thinks the cable TV model sucks now and has become a bad deal for customers. I could easily imagine a new type of cable TV package that mixes some live news and sports channels with access to streaming services.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 4 (Reuters) - Walt Disney (DIS.N) urged customers of Charter Communications' Spectrum cable service to consider switching to a live television option from Hulu as the media companies remain at odds over a new distribution deal. With no deal in place, Disney suggested that Spectrum customers sign up for Hulu + Live TV, a streaming service that offers ESPN, ABC, Disney+ and dozens of other cable channels. "Despite the ongoing dispute, consumers have many other choices—such as Hulu + Live TV—that allow them to enjoy the great programming for which Disney Entertainment is known," the company said in a statement. Disney pulled its channels off Charter's Spectrum cable service last week in the middle of U.S. Open tennis coverage and other live sporting events including college football.
